It’s Time To Think Ahead!

Christmas LightsIt’s that time, again! A lot will be happening this month…dance recitals, chorus & band productions, plays, parades, Santa…and you will want to get some pictures to remember them by. So here are some of my holiday tips:

1) Load NEW batteries into your camera (and keep spare ones on-hand)

2) Make sure you have plenty of free space on your  camera’s memory cards

3) Take pictures BEFORE anyone eats!!!

4) Remember to put your camera away after you take your pictures…this is a hard one (I know!) It is important you actually enjoy the moment. You will not want to miss your child’s acting, dancing, singing…etc. because you were looking down at your camera. The image your mind creates is the most important one…and allowing your child to see you watching him/her during the performance is a memory he/she will cherish forever!

Traditional Rice Throwing – Italian Style

Guests pelt the bride & groom with rice as they leave the church in Asiago Italy.

Did you know throwing rice at a bride and groom after their wedding ceremony is perfectly acceptable with the birds? Yes, if birds could talk, they would tell you they will not be harmed by this long standing tradition…that is, unless they fly in the direct path of the flying rice.

Pictured here is the joyous pelting of a bride & groom after their ceremony in Asiago, Italy. I couldn’t help but laugh as I took these photos…between the happy shouting and what must have been at least 100 bags of riso (Italian for rice), this 15-20 minute event was one of the highlights of this particular Italy trip…yes! the B&G had rice thrown at them for THAT long!

If you want to read more about the myth that surfaced regarding rice being harmful for birds, check out the link on Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/birdrice.asp

This Kiss…

Although today is NOT International Kissing Day (it is actually on July 6th), I see no reason why we can’t warm up and practice for the actual holiday….don’t you agree? 🙂

What does “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed & Something Blue” mean?

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

I love traditions! Especially this one. Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue…a collection of gifts given just before the ceremony. These tokens each represent special meanings:

Old: continuity
New: brand new future
Borrowed: cherished relationships
Blue: faithfulness, purity & loyalty

Although I admit…when I got married, I made sure I had these items arranged before the day of the wedding. It wasn’t until later that I found out these items were traditionally given to the bride at the 11th hour…but who cares! I was eating chocolate donuts at the 11th hour! I’m just glad I added the “Something Old, New, Borrowed, Blue” tradition to my celebration.

It is fun carrying on traditions…make sure to ask the ladies in your family (and your husband-to-be’s family) what additional traditions that they carried on. Tradition is history. And your wedding is the new chapter in history; it is the story you are beginning to write.

For additional fun facts on this “Something Old” tradition, check out this link to The Knot – it has a bit more fun detail.

Fun facts food facts about your wedding day!

Dessert_Antica Due MoriI LOVE food! There is nothing better than sitting at a big table with a bunch of friends & family sharing a meal. The next time you sit down to eat a meal with your family & friends, stop for a minute…take a moment to look around & listen to the colliding conversations. It will most certainly bring a smile to your face, and the feeling you get is what life is all about.

Food brings us together. During my travels to Italy (…ahhhhhh…Italia, mi amore!) I have found time & time again that food is not just for sustenance, but it’s an art collective of passionate people that must be lingered upon & shared. Today’s featured photo is of a scrumptious piece of art…my amazing gelati dessert at Antica Trattoria Due Mori located near the towns of Schio & Malo in Italy…BTW – their risotto dish, Riso nel Cuore del Parmigiano, is pure bliss in a bowl!

FUN STUFF – Here is a fun blog that will cause another food related smile: Foodimentary I love the “Daily Food Holidays” page. Just for fun, click on the month & day of your wedding and find out what food shares your special day…my anniversary is shared by “National Ice Cream Pie Day” – Yay! I am all about ice cream pies 🙂

The Wedding Speech…a MUST SEE!!!

2012-02-18 Powell_379aLR-1a TOASTAs we say in the South “All y’all” guys out there! You now have a new standard to live up to! (Well…just kidding). But really, this video I came across today on YouTube is a must see for ALL – not just brides & grooms. Click here to view video

With all the details that must be done to organize a wedding, make sure you set aside some time to prepare your toast (speech). It is, after all, where you will pour your heart out to those you love.

Of course, if you really don’t want to speak, just get creative like this groom – Cheers!
